Steve H. Hanke is a Professor of Applied Economics and Founder & Co-Director of the Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Troubled Currencies Project at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C., a Senior Advisor at the Renmin University of China’s International Monetary Research Institute in Beijing, a Special Counselor to the Center for Financial Stability in New York, a contributing editor at Central Banking in London and a contributor at the National Review. Prof. Hanke is also a member of the Charter Council of the Society of Economic Measurement and of Euromoney Country Risk’s Experts Panel.

Since 1986 Friedrich Schneider is Professor of Economics at Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Austria, and since 2006 he is Research Professor at the DIW Berlin, Germany. He obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of Konstanz in 1976 and has since held numerous visiting and honorary positions at a number of universities (e.g. at Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark; La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia; University of Saarbrücken. Saarbrücken, Germany; Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand).

Previously, he has worked for IBM as a software engineer and Goldman Sachs as a junior economist.

Christian R. Richter is Professor of Economics and Head of Dept at the German University in Cairo. In his previous position, Christian was Principal Lecturer in Economics and Management at University of Bedfordshire and University of East London (Economics and Finance). Before that he was a Senior Lecturer in Economics at Kingston University Christian was also a Lecturer in Economics at Loughborough University and Cardiff University. In 2015, Christian won the Ernst Wagemann price for best paper in economics in 2013-2014 in Applied Economics Quarterly. In 2009, Christian won a merit award at Kingston University. Christian has studied economics at the Universities of Mainz, Glasgow and Strathclyde. He received his PhD in economics from University of Strathclyde. Christian is also Honorary Chair of the International Network for Economic Research (INFER) where he is active for many years. Christian has organised several Annual Conferences for INFER (and several workshops), which resulted in several special issues of journals and printed volumes. Christian’s main areas of research are Behavioural Economics and Finance, Convergence of Business Cycles, Eurozone Crisis, Financial Economics, Time Frequency Analysis and Climate Change. Christian won research grants from the Leverhulme Trust as well as from the Austrian Central Bank. Christian is an editorial board member of International Economics and Economic Policy, International Journal of Public Policy, Romanian Journal of Fiscal Policy and Economic Affairs..

Don Augusthinus Lamaech Flassy was born in the village of Seribau District of Teminaboean, West Papua, on August 28, 1947, the son of the couple Simon Tesia and Salomina Flassy. Called Don, Agus is also Thinus, bearing the fam or clan name Flassy since mama Salomina was divorced by father Simon and subsequently under the care of uncle Anton Hendrik Flassy as guardian. He is known as a planner, researcher, author, editor, political activist, artist, cultural activist, teacher, lecturer and also bureaucrat. In his last position, he was the Secretary of the BAPPEDA of Irian Jaya Province 1997-2001. He had won Structural Position of the Main Trustee and Functional Position of the Expert Researcher of Other Social Sciences, Stage IV/e. Now, even though he has retired as a civil servant, he still has a cool position as Secretary of the Papua Institute for Science and Technology (LIPTEK). Since November 2017, the husband of Yuliana Christivora Welikin, SE., MM, Father of two sons (Don Rodrigo Athur Douglas Flassy, S. Sos. And Don Steven Patrick Flassy) and one daughter (Vanda Oliva Angela Flassy) has officially become Doctor in social Sciences. He defended his dissertation entitled: Peta Jalan Balik Bangsa Papua di Negeri Papua Bagian Barat: “Sebuah Keputusan Damai Pemulihan Jati Diri (The Roadmap to the Revival of the Papuan Nation in West Papua: “A Peaceful Decision on the Restoration of the Self”)” in the Cenderawasih University Postgraduate of Doctor Social Sciences, Jayapura. Education was starting from Elementary School in SR Seribau (Class I to III) 1955, Dutch Language Connection School at JVVS (Class IV to VI)1957 in Teminaboean, continuing Junior High School 1963 in ODO Fak-Fak, Senior High School 1967 in SPG Merauke and Semi-Academic 1970 in PGSLP Sukarnapura. Before becoming a doctor, Don Flassy studied at the Indonesian Language and Literature Department, FKSS-IKIP, Yogyakarta (graduated baccalaureate in 1973 and undergraduate in 1979) continue to Advance education at Department of Southeast Asia and Oceania, Faculteit der Letteren Rijksuniversiteit te Leiden, Netherlands (obtained an M.A. degree in 1992). As a writer, he has produced many books and will continue to write.

A National Merit Scholar, Alan studied Mathematics and History at Rice University before completing his PhD in Economic History at Johns Hopkins. He continued his academic career at Princeton, University of Virginia, and Carnegie Mellon, teaching economics and business development behind a bushy beard, wearing a wool jacket with suede elbows. Alan took his experience tinkering with cars to work on NASA’s lunar module docking station simulator, a true rocket scientist. He had a talent for explaining complex ideas and embraced technology, giving his kids early access with old computer punch cards for art projects. In 1979 Alan left academia to pursue a career in oil and gas in Houston. After a brief time with United Gas Pipeline he founded Energy Planning Inc., a consulting firm that employed up to twenty five people, including his entire family. Providing his opinion as an expert witness in nearly 100 court cases was his favorite part of the job. He relished catching holes in opponents’ arguments and chuckled when opposing council busted him for writing geometric proofs instead of taking notes. At age fifty, Alan joined Houston Fit and completed his first marathon. He caught the running bug and supported new marathoners as Team Blue’s coach. They may not have been fast, but Coach Alan was exceedingly proud of his runners and many considered him a father figure. He did too many races to count from California to Athens and everywhere in between and leaves an impressive collection of Turkey Trot t-shirts.

Benjamin Yamb is professor of economics and statistics at the Advanced School of Economics and Commerce at the University of Douala in Cameroon. He was Head of International Trade and Management Department for almost 10 years (2003-2013) where he set up the professional master degree in International Trade and Supply Chain Management. He holds a Master degree in Economics (University of Montreal, Quebec Canada), a master degree in Statistics (The American University Washington DC) and a doctorate in economics (University of Paris 1 pantheon Sorbonne). He is the author of several publications in local and international journals. He has served as a consultant in many international organizations, such as the European Union where he set up a system for collecting, processing and analyzing commercial data in Chad. His areas of interest are financial macroeconomics including exchange rates, governance models in this case in developing countries and discrete choice statistical models.

The late Christopher Culp was a Fellow at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise, Senior Advisor with Compass Lexecon, Adjunct Professor at the Swiss Finance Institute, and Adjunct Professor at Universität Bern in the Institut für Finanzmanagement. From 1998 through 2013, Dr. Culp was an adjunct faculty member at The University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. Culp was the author of four books – Structured Finance & Insurance (Wiley, 2006), Risk Transfer: Derivatives in Theory & Practice (Wiley, 2004), The ART of Risk Management (Wiley, 2002), and The Risk Management Process (Wiley, 2001) – and the co-editor of two books – Corporate Aftershock: The Public Policy Consequences of the Failure of Enron and Other Major Corporations (Wiley, 2003; co-edited with William Niskanen), and Corporate Hedging in Theory & Practice (Risk Books, 1999; co-edited with Merton Miller). He held a Ph.D. from The University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and a B.A. in economics (Phi Beta Kappa, general honors, and departmental honors) from The Johns Hopkins University, where he was one of Steve Hanke’s students.

Dr. Johnson has written frequently on monetary and development economics, and on topics in diplomatic history, in the Journal of Economics and Political Economy, the Small Wars Journal, the Journal of Social and Administrative Sciences, and Advances in Social Sciences Research Journal, among others. A collection of his articles is published here in open-access format as Uncommon Arguments on Common Topics (June 2022). His Gold, France, and the Great Depression, 1919-1932 (Yale, 1997) received an award from the Association of American Publishers – and has been called the best one-volume account of events that led to the Depression. Johnson was a senior expert in finance and governance for the United States Department of Defense (DoD) in Afghanistan during 2009 to 2014. He was team leader and senior economist for MPRI, a DoD contractor in Iraq during 2008-2009, on a project to assist post-conflict transition and economic recovery. He later published critical accounts – included here — of US policy in both wars. He was an economist for the US State Department in Iraq prior to that, and an independent contractor/ economist for USAID, the US Treasury, the British DfID, and the Asian Development Bank going back to 1996; venues included Saudi Arabia, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, and Israel-Palestine. He taught financial or international economics at the University of Maryland in Saudi Arabia, the American University in Kyrgyzstan, and Boston University. Johnson completed a PhD in diplomatic and economic history at Yale University in 1994. He worked on his dissertation with Harry Miskimin, Willem Buiter, and (informally) Robert Mundell. He previously earned a BA in philosophy from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), and a MBA in corporate finance at UCLA. He is fluent in several languages. During 1981-1987, he was employed at Chase Manhattan Bank where he was promoted to second vice president, and as a vice president at Citibank; he worked in money markets, options, and foreign exchange. In 2018, Johnson was a Democratic candidate for the Massachusetts State House; but for unfortunate filing errors, he believes the race was winnable. He is an economics advisor at Trade Engine LLC, an IT development firm based in Wyoming. He has been a high school tennis coach, most recently for two seasons at the Chinese Immersion charter school in Hadley, MA. Johnson’s daughter, Elizabeth Loss Johnson, PhD, recently joined the faculty of Feinberg Medical School in Chicago.

Since 1986 Friedrich Schneider is Professor of Economics at Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Austria, and since 2006 he is Research Professor at the DIW Berlin, Germany. He obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of Konstanz in 1976 and has since held numerous visiting and honorary positions at a number of universities (e.g. at Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark; La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia; University of Saarbrücken. Saarbrücken, Germany; Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand). During 1991 to 1996 he was Dean of Social Science and Economics at Johannes Kepler University of Linz and Vice President for Foreign Affairs of the Johannes Kepler University of Linz from 1996-2007. He was President of the Austrian Economic Association during 1997-1999 and from 2005-2008 he was President of the German Economic Association (Verein für Socialpolitik). From 2013 - 2016 he is Chairman of the Academic Advisory Board at the Zeppelin University, Friedrichshafen, Germany. He has also been consultant to numerous organisations including the Brussels EU Commission, IMF, World Bank. He has published extensively in leading Economics journals including The American Economic Review, The Quarterly Journal of Economics, The Economic Journal and the Journal of Economic Literature. He has also published numerous book chapters and books including The Shadow Economy (with Dominik H. Enste, Cambridge Uni. Press, 2002), The Encyclopaedia of Public Choice Vol. I and II (with Charles K. Dr. Kurt Schuler - Center for Financial Stability in New York, USA Kurt Schuler is an economist in the Office of International Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. In his spare time he pursues an interest in economic history; the Historical Financial Statistics data set elsewhere on this site is one result. Schuler’s affiliation with the Center for Financial Stability centers on the development of the free of charge Historical Financial Statistics and implies no endorsement by the Department of the Treasury. Before joining the Treasury, Schuler worked as a consultant, then as an economist at the U.S. Congress. As a consultant he undertook projects for aid agencies, central banks, investment firms, and think tanks around the world. He also wrote studies about currency boards with Steve H. Hanke of Johns Hopkins University, which influenced monetary reforms in the 1990s in Bosnia, Bulgaria, Estonia, and Lithuania. At the U.S. Congress he was a senior economist at the Joint Economic Committee. There he wrote staff reports on taxation, spending, and monetary policy, and occasionally assisted with drafting legislation. His research on dollarization had some influence on Ecuador’s dollarization in 2000. Schuler has a Ph.D. in economics from George Mason University. He has been a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He has written more than 100 publications, including books, essays, and newspaper articles. Because of his job, he refrains from commenting on matters of current economic policy and focuses his work for public consumption on matters of economic history.

Crossed the Pacific Ocean as an American Field Service student from Japan to the United States, and graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego, California. The AFS students from around the world had a chance to meet President John F. Kennedy. This marked the beginning of my life and career in the United States. In college, I was interested in philosophy as well as in mathematics and economics, and this interest continues to this day. After getting my Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, I was mainly affiliated with the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, where I served as assistant, associate, and full professor. Served also as an interim head of the economics department, as director of graduate studies, as a member of the Executive Council of the College of Business Administration, and as a member of the University Senate. I then moved to Japan and taught at a number of universities, private and national. With this background, I have come to UBD (Universiti Brunei Darussalam), one of the fastest rising universities in Asia, and I am having a great time interacting with the bright minds of Brunei Darussalam. I find the country beautiful and peaceful.

Chief Economist at INVESCO plc, John Greenwood OBE, is a graduate of Edinburgh University. He did economic research at Tokyo University and was a visiting research fellow at the Bank of Japan (1970-74). From 1974 he was Chief Economist with GT Management plc, based initially in Hong Kong and later in San Francisco. As editor of Asian Monetary Monitor he proposed a currency board scheme for stabilizing the Hong Kong dollar in 1983 that is still in operation today. John was a director of the Hong Kong Futures Exchange Clearing Corporation (1987-91) and council member the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (1992-93). An economic adviser to the Hong Kong Government (1992-93), he has been a member of the Committee on Currency Board Operations of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority since 1998. He is also a member of the Shadow Monetary Policy Committee in England. John is a director of INVESCO Asia Ltd in Hong Kong, INVESCO Asset Management Singapore Ltd, and the Hong Kong Association in London. In 1980 he translated Yoshio Suzuki’s book, “Money and Banking in Contemporary Japan” from Japanese. In 2007 he completed a book entitled Hong Kong’s Link to the US Dollar: Origins and Evolution which covers the collapse of the currency in 1983 and its subsequent restoration to stability under the plan he devised.

Born on December 15, 1984, in Togo, I have a doctorate in International Economics in 2015. I am also a graduate in Trade Policy Analysis at the Trade Policy Training Center in Africa (TRAPCA) with partnership of LUND UNIVERSITY (Sweden). I am currently a research professor at the University of Kara, Togo and Trade policy professor at TRAPCA (Arusha, Tanzania). I teach courses in International Trade, Trade Policy Practice, Trade Negotiations and Applied Econometrics. My research covers the liberalization of trade in services, the effects of regional trade agreements, non-tariff barriers, and macroeconomics policies and so on. I did also research on impact evaluation of trade policies implemented in developing countries. In addition to my job as a researcher, I am also a consultant and I have a good experience. In the context of AfCFTA, I drafted the national strategy of AfCFTA implementation in Togo from June to December 2019, as consultant of UNECA. I am currently formulating the AfCFTA implementation Strategy of ECOWAS, as Support Consultant hired by UNECA and ECOWAS. From 2011 to 2015, I was Program Officer at the Ministry of Social Action where I coordinated programs and projects aimed at empowering vulnerable people in Togo.

Gwen was an accomplished anthropologist, avid fiction writer, and was loved by her students at Penn. Gwen was most proud of the close relationships she had with her family, friends, and godchildren, who adored her and will miss her dearly. A wake was held at TOALE BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME in Bradenton Florida on January 5, 2022 followed by funeral services at Bradenton SDA Church. Gwen Gordon was appointed to the department of Legal Studies and Business Ethics in 2013. Her research was an ethnographically-informed comparative corporate law, focusing specifically on the intersection of indigenous peoples’ cultural norms with issues of corporate governance and social responsibility. Gwen did long-term ethnographic fieldwork in New Zealand with an indigenously owned corporation. She received a B.A. in 2002 from Cornell University and her J.D. in 2006 from Harvard Law School, where she focused upon social and economic human rights for indigenous groups. She received a Ph.D. in anthropology from Princeton University in 2014; prior to her appointment Gwen worked as a corporate attorney in the London and New York offices of Shearman and Sterling LLP.

I was born and raised in Venezuela, where I studied industrial (production) engineering and earned a Ph.D. in engineering with a concentration in statistics. In 2013, I was a professor at Universidad Simon Bolivar (USB) and the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administracion (IESA), both located in Caracas, Venezuela. At USB, I broadly taught in the areas of industrial engineering, quality control, probability, and statistics. At IESA, I mostly taught quantitative methods, business statistics, and research methods. In 2014, I moved to the U.S. to pursue a Ph.D. in economics with a concentration in economic development at Florida State University (FSU). Given the difficult situation in Venezuela, life was giving me a big opportunity, and I took it! At first, it was a challenge to be a student again, but at the end, I did so successfully and enjoyed one of the most remarkable periods of my life. I learned a lot, improved my research, and practiced some old hobbies like playing guitar, rollerblading, and playing table tennis (I was in the FSU Table Tennis team and participated in several national and regional competitions). I also had the immense privilege to closely work with my FSU advisor, James Gwartney. On August 19 of 2019, I successfully defended my dissertation at FSU, culminating this “second” stage as a student. On the next day I started teaching activities at Ursinus College, PA, USA. I am currently an assistant professor of Statistics in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Ursinus College. After leaving my parents, extended family, and friends in Venezuela, I have been incredibly blessed to have found my wonderful wife, the love of my life, and a wonderful job both at the same place and time.

His expertise is grounded in decades of ethnographic research in the Southwest Pacific and Southeast Asia, particularly in the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, West Papua, Maluku, and Kalimantan. Across these regions, he has studied how Indigenous communities draw on religion, heritage, and historical memory not only to sustain cultural identity but also to challenge ongoing forms of colonialism and marginalisation. His research highlights how these struggles connect to global debates about decolonisation, human rights, and environmental justice. Jaap is the author of Prophetic Histories (2025), which examines an evangelical, Israelite-inspired movement on the island of Malaita in Solomon Islands. This movement treats both the past and the present as charged with prophetic meaning for an imminent future, offering a powerful example of how religion can reshape politics and identity. His earlier book Living with Intricate Futures (2000) explored knowledge and religion among the Imyan of West Papua. His current work investigates the entanglement of heritage, religion, and time in West Papua, a place where questions of cultural survival, political autonomy, and environmental change remain urgent and unresolved.
Biography I studied anthropology at the University of Amsterdam and earned my PhD from Radboud University Nijmegen in 2000. I held postdoctoral positions at Radboud University and the Australian National University. He has served as president of the Business History Conference and the Economic History Association. A former editor of The Journal of Economic History, he has written extensively on U.S. business history, business-government relations, the economic aspects of modern institutional development in America, and the rise of the bureaucratic state. His books include Competition and Cooperation: The Emergence of a Modern Trade Association; The Changing Economic Order; The Public Image of Big Business in America, 1880-1940; America at Middle Age; and The Rise of the Corporate Commonwealth: U.S. Business and Public Policy in the Twentieth Century. He is president and a principal of the Business History Group, a consulting organization, and has been an historical consultant to Merck & Co., Inc., Pacific Telesis Group, AT&T, and the World Bank Group. Marlina’s career is supported by comprehensive education, namely: elementary, junior high, high school graduated in Jayapura city as a barometer of education in Papua, then completed her undergraduate degree in Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Cenderawasih University, Jayapura 1995, S2 (Master) with an M. Hum from the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta 2002, and S3 (Ph.D.) from the Department of Ethnology at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Georg August Goettingen University, Germany 2015. As a researcher, Marlina was awarded as a Young Community Care Researcher from the Ministry of Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia in 2004. Her seriousness in raising gender issues that raised the issue of children and women in Papua made her crowned by the Jayapura City Government through the Jayapura City Women’s and Children’s Empowerment Service, Papua with an award as the Achievement Image of Papuan Women’s Charisma in 2004. Her love for gender issues has led to her being the coordinator of the Cenderawasih University’s Center for Gender and Child Studies (PSGA) (2019-2023). Before becoming a lecturer Marlina, by the Arts Council of Irian Jaya (DKIJ); had been assigned an ethno-cinematography internship at the Department of Ethno-cinematography, the Faculty of Social Sciences, State University of Leiden the Netherlands in 1992. Marlina once wrote The ethnographic book of the Mooi tribe in Sorong Regency (Etnografi suku Mooi di Kabupaten Sorong), the Ansus Ethnography in Yapen Waropen District (Etnografi Suku Ansus di Kabupaten Yapen Waropen), and the Ethnographic of the Napan-Wainame Tribe in Nabire Regency (Etnografi Suku Napan- Wainame di Kabupaten Nabire), which was published in Series I and II of Papua Ethnography in collaboration with the Cenderawasih University and the Regional Planning Agency (Bappeda) of Irian Jaya Province. Rafael joined Creighton University in June 2021. He currently serves as Program Manager of the Menard Family Center for Economic Inquiry (MCEI) and Director of the Business Research Fellow Program, where he supports the center’s daily operations and student engagement efforts. Alongside these responsibilities, he briefly participated in undergraduate instruction—teaching Introductory Microeconomics in Fall 2021 and Introductory Macroeconomics from Spring 2022 through Fall 2023—before focusing entirely on his administrative role within the center. Rafael is originally from Venezuela, where he spent most of his life before relocating to the United States in March 2018 due to the country’s escalating political and economic challenges. In Venezuela, he built a meaningful academic and civic career over more than 15 years. He served as a tenured Associate Professor at Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado in Barquisimeto, Lara State, and founded a think tank focused on advancing economic and political freedom—particularly through the lens of free-market ideas. His academic journey includes an Associate degree in Administration of Physical and Financial Resources, a BS in Accounting, an MSc in Economics—which became the foundation for his research interests—and a Doctorate in Management. Upon arriving in the U.S., Rafael began a new chapter in his life starting from zero. He worked at a fertilizer factory as the "organic shoveler" before joining Texas Tech University as a Visiting Research Associate at the Free Market Institute. There, he spent three enriching years immersed in research and academic collaboration before transitioning to his current role at Creighton University. Rafael now resides with his wife, two children, and their Siberian Husky in the historic downtown of Papillion, Nebraska. Professor WONG, Wing-Keung obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the USA with a major in Business Statistics (Statistics and Finance) and obtained his Bachelor degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, with a major in Mathematics and a double minor in Economics and Statistics. Currently, he is a Chair Professor at the Department of Finance, Asia University. He was a Full Professor at the Department of Economics, Hong Kong Baptist University, and Deputy Director at Risk Management Institute, National University of Singapore. He appears in “Who’s Who in the World” and gets Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. 2017, Marquis Who’s Who. His Erdos number is 3. He is ranked top 1% by Social Science Research Network and in the list of top Taiwan economists and Asian economists and top economists by RePEc. He has published more than three hundred papers including papers published in some top journals. He has more than 11500 citations in Google Scholar, more than 9800 citations in Researchgate, and more than 4500 citations in Scopus. His h-index is 59, (40 since 2017) and i10-index is 230, (209 since 2017) by Google Scholar citation in December 2021.

Ron William Nielsen (aka Jan Nurzynski) was born in Poland. He studied physics and mathematics at the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland. He is a nuclear scientist. He has carried out his research work in the Department of Nuclear Physics in the Institute of Advanced Studies at theAustralian National University, Canberra, ACT, Australia but initially he worked briefly in the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Krakow, Poland. He also carried out his research work as a visiting professor in nuclear research centres in Switzerland and Germany. The objective of his research work was investigation of the mechanism of nuclear reactions, application of nuclear reactions to nuclear spectroscopy and a study of nuclear polarization phenomena. He supported his work by using particle accelerators (cyclotrons and electrostatic accelerators), a wide range of particle detection techniques anda wide range of mainframe computers for the theoretical interpretations of his experimental results. His work in nuclear physics is summarised in Nuclear Reactions: Mechanism and Spectroscopy. After his retirement, he became interested in environmental issues and published a comprehensive Green Handbook, where he discusses all critical events shaping our future. This book was endorsed by academics, including Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Paul Crutzen from Germany, and by other readers. More recently, he focused his attention on the issues associated with the growth of population and economic growth. The primary aim was to understand the Anthropocene, the recent strong anthropogenic activities and impacts, which have been proposed as a transition to a new geological epoch. In connection with this study, he formulated two simple analytical methods: the general law of growth, which can be used to study mechanism of any type of growth, and the relatedmethod based on the application of simple differential equations in the analysis of data and in predicting growth.

Steve H. Hanke is a Professor of Applied Economics and Founder & Co-Director of the Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Troubled Currencies Project at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C., a Senior Advisor at the Renmin University of China’s International Monetary Research Institute in Beijing, a Special Counselor to the Center for Financial Stability in New York, a contributing editor at Central Banking in London and a contributor at the National Review. Prof. Hanke is also a member of the Charter Council of the Society of Economic Measurement and of Euromoney Country Risk’s Experts Panel. In the past, Prof. Hanke taught economics at the Colorado School of Mines and at the University of California, Berkeley. He served as a Member of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisers in Maryland in 1976-77, as a Senior Economist on President Reagan’s Council of Economic Advisers in 1981-82, and as a Senior Advisor to the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress in 1984-88. Prof. Hanke served as a State Counselor to both the Republic of Lithuania in 1994-96 and the Republic of Montenegro in 1999-2003. He was also an Advisor to the Presidents of Bulgaria in 1997-2002, Venezuela in 1995-96, and Indonesia in 1998. He played an important role in establishing new currency regimes in Argentina, Estonia, Bulgaria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ecuador, Lithuania, and Montenegro. Prof. Hanke has also held senior appointments in the governments of many other countries, including Albania, Kazakhstan, the United Arab Emirates, and Yugoslavia. Prof. Hanke has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees by the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (2003), the Free University of Tbilisi (2010), Istanbul Kültür University (2012), the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (2013), Varna Free University (2015), the Universität Liechtenstein (2017), and the D.A. Tsenov Academy of Economics (2018) in recognition of his scholarship on exchange-rate regimes. He is a Distinguished Associate of the International Atlantic Economic Society, a Distinguished Professor at the Universitas Pelita Harapan in Jakarta, Indonesia, a Professor Asociado (the highest honor awarded to international experts of acknowledged competence) at the Universidad del Azuay in Cuenca, Ecuador, a Profesor Visitante at the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (the UPC’s highest academic honor), and the Gottfried von Haberler Professor at the European Center of Austrian Economics Foundation (ECAEF) in Liechtenstein. In 1998, he was named one of the twenty-five most influential people in the world by World Trade Magazine. In 2020, Prof. Hanke was knighted, and is a “Knight of the Order of the Flag”. Prof. Hanke’s most recent books are Currency Boards: Volume 1. Theory and Policy (2020), Currency Boards: Volume 2.
